Abuja National Mosque
Abuja National Mosque is the most recognizable iconic building in the city, with a huge number of visitors every year. For the many Muslims who reside in the city, this structure represents a very important spiritual center. Unlike most mosques in the world, the Abuja Mosque is open to non-Muslims and is only closed to the public during prayer. The Abuja Mosque is located on Independence Avenue. Interestingly, the National Christian Center is located nearby.
General Information
The Abuja Mosque was completed in 1984. At the corners of the main building are four minarets with spiral staircases inside, the height of which is 120 meters. From afar, one can see the large gilded dome of the mosque. The total area of all premises is 20 thousand square meters. The prayer hall is a large room without columns, crowned with four small and one large domes. Glistening in the sun, they are one of the most colorful spectacles in Abuja. Inscriptions from the Quran can be seen on the rings of the huge chandelier.
The building also houses an administrative block including offices, a conference room for 500 participants and a library. A small museum has been opened on the mosque’s grounds, featuring fine collections of ceramics, Muslim art paraphernalia, and stone engravings.
